Drew Barrymore Opens Up About Her Divorce Struggles

Drew Barrymore, who has been married three times, is opening up about the “shame” of her divorces — and how she was finally able to “liberate” herself.

On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, singer Marie Osmond joined Barrymore as co-host at the Drew’s News desk, where they had a heart-to-heart about divorce.

“I had so much shame around divorce,” Barrymore said. “For some reason, something happened and I said, I’m no longer willing to feel this way. And it just lifted from me.”

She continued, “I just thought, when you get a divorce, you’re saving the precious commodity on this planet which is only our time. And when you’re truly in a situation that isn’t functioning the way that optimally it hopes and wishes to be, we accept that and we improve our quality of life by moving forward.”

Barrymore first married bar owner Jeremy Thomas in 1994, before filing for divorce two months later. She was also married to comedian Tom Green from 2001 to 2002. A decade later she wed Will Kopelman, with whom she shares two children. However, they divorced in 2016 after four years of marriage.

“Divorce now to me — I don’t have shame around it,” Barrymore said. “I’m like totally liberated.”

Osmond, who divorced her second husband in 2007 before remarrying her first husband in 2011, also weighed in on the topic.

“What I feel is, I believe in doing everything possible to make a marriage work. But you have to have two people into it,” she said. “You both have to be willing to do it. I also believe there are some divorces made in heaven.”

She added, “So, in my situation, I divorced at 50. I had eight children that I needed to support and take care of. I was basically the breadwinner … Actually, that’s when I lost 50 pounds. And I tell everybody, ‘I actually lost 350 pounds.’”
