Lady with Knitted Top – 1960s
The fascinating thing about this photo is the knitted top on this lady and how it seems to be somewhat futuristic. The tie and collar designs are pretty nice but it’s the knitting style that is truly magnificent because it looks like an 8-bit video and those did not come till the 1980s. Apart from the beautiful contrast of the orange and black colours, the lady’s mascara really catches the eye.
Getting Some Shade – France, 1955
Can you remember this song done by Roy Ayers – Everybody loves the sunshine? We think the title needs some adjustment and that “99% of people love the Sunshine” would be better. It’s obvious that some persons do not. Although the French woman in the photo was content to catch some sun out in the open in 1955, she chose to do so from underneath a yellow umbrella with a glass of lemonade. At least, her skin would not be hit by the harsh sun. We like the appeal of the splashes of yellow in the photo with the lemonade, the shade and the lady’s blonde hair.
Kids with Balloons – Disneyland, 1961
It seems to us that the two cute children in the photo made a secret wish and it came true! Although Snow White and friends would have loved it, the siblings were not trying to audition for roles as the dwarfs, as you might be thinking. Any fan of any movie made by Disney should try to visit Disneyland even just once. If you weren’t lucky enough to be taken there when you were little, you should ensure you give your own children the opportunity.
Boy Selling Lemonade – 1973
The boy in this photo thought to maximize the bright and sunny summer day to sell some lemonade to his friendly neighbors. Although we can’t tell if he single handedly prepared the drink, we are almost sure that he made the cute ad for his stand. With the star-studded makeshift flag, this photo captures the American dream which is to utilize the tools and skills you have and make something meaningful for yourself.
Girls Just Want to Have Fun – 1980s
Without a doubt, the 1980s was very colorful. From the photo, it’s clear that the ladies were in sync with the era, dressing in color-appropriate manner. Bright colors and crazy hairstyles were the order of the day. We imagine Cyndi Lauper’s classic “Girls just wanna have fun” playing loudly in the background as this group photo was shot. You almost can’t think of vintage and not think of the ’80s.
Sitting on a Caddy – 1975
Since way back when till date, Cadillacs are symbolic of style and affluence. It would seem that the guy in the photo had not just the cook ride but also the fancy clothes to match. We strongly believe that if you have the means to buy it, why not? One sure thing us that the owner of this Cadillac maintained his treasure in top shape and felt proud of it so much that he had to take a shot of himself sitting on it.
Friends Posing on the Beach – 1950s
If going to the beach irks you, then you just might have some kind of problem. Fine sand could be somewhat irksome but asides that, a visit to the beach is one of the sweetest experiences ever. It’s an amazing place to hang out with family and friends or even a romantic interest as It can kindle togetherness. The adorable friends in the photo decided to have a group picture with the horizon as a backdrop.
Keeping Cool in the Summer – New York City, 1943
Through the years, New York city has seen a lot of changes. Its people are no longer the same, classic restaurants and stores have opened and closed down. But one thing that has stayed constant for a long time is the hotness of the summers. As far back as 1943, mid-summer came with heat waves and New York people devised different means to stay cool. For instance, these two friends are drenching each other in cold water.
Couples Sunbathing – 1940s
We stand to be corrected but doesn’t it look like the two couples in the photo had their double date all planned only to have a single join in? This ’40s vintage photo says that’s exactly what transpired. Anyway, these friends seemed to be having a great time at a nature reserve. They’re nestled in a couple of rocks just above a lake. They’re trying to get dry in the sun after taking a dip in the water.
Inspecting Women’s Swimsuits – 1920s
It wouldn’t come as a surprise if you’re wondering what on the green earth is going on in this photo. We just asked the same question. This just goes to show the amount of change society has undergone in the last century. The man was simply taking a measurement of the ladies’ swimsuits to know how short or right they were. Today, this isn’t applicable in majority of countries in the world. However, it was normal in the 1920s.
Ladies Strutting – London, 1930s
It’s quite obvious from their dressing that these ladies had some big event to attend. It would seem that their car had just dropped them off and they were making the short walk into the event venue when this shot was taken. The resulting image was something many artists would proudly show off as the cover of their album today. Can you recall that timeless scene from Reservoir Dogs, when the crew strutted down the street in slow motion? Well, these women could be the called the actual Reservoir Dogs.
Man Riding Harley – 1955
A leather jacket and the slicked back hair were the classic combo for looking cool in the ’50s. If you didn’t rock that look, you were nowhere near being cool. Knowing how to handle a motorbike was the icing on top and a great excuse to have a photo taken just like this. If you watched the movie, Grease, you might think this guy is Danny Zuko. However, the difference is that Danny who was played by John Travolta didn’t ride a Harley.
Friends Having a Picnic – 1900s
Picnics have been a practice since man surfaced in earth. Hence, it shouldn’t ruffle anyone’s feathers to see a vintage picture of two women and a son in the park, having cake and fruits. But even at that, the fact that this photo is more than a century old is really surprising. The entire set up from the clothes to the cute little teapot suggest that this scene was from a totally different time.
Holding Hats in the Wind – Philadelphia, 1947
In all honesty, there’s no way the photographer of this terrific photo could have gotten it right if he put in every effort he could muster. On their way to their workplace, these men all held in to their hats at the same time. This means that it was probably quite windy at that moment and they all held on to their hats to prevent it from being blown off. It can’t get any more vintage than this.
Date Night – 1950s
A lot of things have changed as it concerns dating. These days, the norm is to look casual and meet at formal places for first dates. But the opposite was the norm in the ’50s. You’d don your best clothes and meet in a classic diner. We can’t help but admire this couple. You can see the man holding the milkshake as his date takes a sip. Dating is no longer what it once was.
