Why Fishing Is Good For Seniors

Do you know someone, possibly of retirement age, who absolutely adores fishing? Have you ever wondered why? Aside from being downright enjoyable, there are many benefits of fishing.

As people grow older, they may find it more difficult to accomplish things they once did easily. Gardening, for example, though you may never have considered it strenuous when you were young, can seem far more so as you age. It’s harder to bend over or get up from a kneeling position. Subjecting yourself to that kind of strain can open you up to the risk of injury.

But hobbies and outdoor activities are important, particularly in your golden years. It’s important to find activities that are appropriate for your cognitive abilities, physical abilities, and age. Fishing is a good option. It can help lower stress, it’s relaxing, and can lessen anxiety. It’s beneficial for older adults because it involves light physical activity.

Below, we are going to further explore a few of the benefits of fishing. Who knows? You may find yourself picking up a fishing pole next time you’re at the store.

Socialization

You can fish alone, it’s true, but you can also fish with a friend or several friends. It could also be the perfect outing for you and your grandchild. It can be a social activity if you want it to be, so consider inviting friends and family the next time you plan a fishing trip. You’ll make memories that will linger, long after that fishy smell goes away.

Consider having a competition as to who can catch the biggest fish, the heaviest fish, first fish, etc. If you crave the companionship of others, invite them along with you the next time you go fishing. They don’t even have to fish if they don’t want to. They can bring a book, listen to music (quietly or with their earbuds), or just converse with you.

Relieve Stress

You can enjoy the outdoors and relax when you fish. Look around and see some of mother nature’s most beautiful works while you wait for those fish to bite. Most of the time, your environment will be quiet and calm, which helps to ease your body and mind. Feelings of anxiety will drain away as your stress levels lessen. This is particularly helpful for people with high blood pressure or heart health issues. It may even help reduce the potential for heart attack and stroke.

Exercise

You might not think of sitting with a fishing pole and waiting for the fish to bite as exercise. (Keep in mind, there is fly fishing which does take a bit of physical exertion.) Chances are, even if you’re not fly fishing, you’re casting your line. You will then be reeling in your line. These essential, repetitive movements can aid older individuals with dexterity, motor skills, cognitive retention, and hand strength. If you get a fish, you’re going to work a little harder, so there’s that to look forward to as well.

If you can find a pond, lake, etc. within walking distance, you can get your daily walk-in. Once again, invite someone along if you want a bit of companionship during your fishing excursion. You can both get a little exercise that you may not have gotten around to otherwise.
